On April 1, CE 71, ZAFT launched two new Mobile Suit machines, the ZGMF-X09A and the ZGMF-X10A and they were named "Justice" and "Freedom" respectively by the President of the Supreme Council of PLANT, Patrick Zala. Both machines are part of a series of advanced MSs developed based on reverse-engineering technology from captured MSs from the Earth Alliance's G Project. Most of the Justice and Freedom's weapons systems are tested on the GuAIZ YFX-600R experimental MS.

Over a month later, on May 17, CE 71, Asran Zala, former pilot of the GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam , was assigned the mission to recover or destroy the stolen Freedom. Instead, Asran joins forces with the pilot of the Freedom, his old friend Kira Yamato , to defend the neutral nation of Orb against attacks by the Earth Alliance. Later, Asran encounters the support ship FFMH-Y101 Eternal , which is carrying two METEOR units.
