XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe

XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe

The XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe (aka Deathscythe or Gundam Zero-Two)

is the second of five Gundams sent to Earth from the space colonies in New Mobile Report Gundam Wing. It will be piloted by Duo Maxwell.

Features

The Deathscythe Gundam was Professor G's "masterpiece". It has exceptional stealth capabilities, with a pair of Hyper Jammers mounted on its backpack, which prevented the Gundam from being visible to radars or sensors visuals, making it invisible to most electronic devices. This allowed him to sneak into facilities and even enemy Mobile Suits without being detected. With the highest speed among the five original Gundams, the Deathscythe Gundam's fighting style revolves around quickly approaching the enemy, striking then retreating.

The Deathscythe's main weapon being its Beam Scythe. The power and reach of the scythe allowed it to destroy most single (and sometimes multiple) targets in a single sweep. The Deathscythe also carries a Buster Shield on its left arm, which is lined with a Scissor katar (a type of scissor). His arsenal being supplemented by a set of Vulcan cannons and collar-mounted machine guns. The suddenness with which this sinister-looking Gundam arrives, its invisibility on sensors, and the speed and ferocity of its attacks engender great fear in its enemies, worthy of its sinister reaper face.

  • Hyper Jammer

The backpack's protruding nozzles disperse jamming particles that jam enemy radar and cameras. The Gundam Deathscythe itself is not affected by jamming particles.

  • Self-Destruct System

Like other Gundams, the Deathscythe was built to self-destruct if the pilot chooses to do so. A remote detonator is placed in the cockpit and if a serious situation happens, the pilot can destroy the Gundam. The system was designed to overload its power systems and has enough explosive power to destroy several city blocks. This is a last option tactic if the pilot is unable to protect the Gundam, without letting it fall into enemy hands. It can also be used as a large explosive device to wipe out large targets.

Armaments

  • Vulcan Gun: A pair of headshot weapons. Of low offensive power, used only to restrict enemy movement, and lay down a wall of suppressive fire due to their rapid fire capability.

  • Machine Cannon: A pair of shoulder-mounted shell cannons that can deal significant damage to lightly armored machines.
  • Beam Scythe: A powerful close combat weapon that can cleave through any armor, and is even capable of operating underwater. The heat and strong magnetic field it produces can begin to disintegrate the target even as the blade approaches. A piston on the back of the scythe's head is capable of rotating the beam emitter up to 90 degrees, and the emitted beam can take a shape other than that of a scythe blade. Additionally, the scythe is stored in retracted form on the rear skirt of the MS.
  • Buster Shield: In addition to its defensive capabilities, the Buster Shield can be used as a close-range weapon. A beam-like blade can be emitted from the cutting shield regardless of whether the physical blades in front have separated. The shield itself can even be launched towards its target thanks to the thruster on the back.
  • Cannon: A long-barreled cannon used only once by the Deathscythe. Held over the shoulder while firing, the Deathscythe used this cannon for the aerial bombardment of a stolen OZ transport plane as it aided the Maganac Corps in repelling OZ's invading forces, and to buy time for the townspeople to escape.

History

The Deathscythe Gundam was designed and built by Professor G in a secret facility somewhere in the L2 Cluster Colony. One of the many people who worked on the Gundam was Duo Maxwell, an orphan boy who would later pilot the machine. Once Duo learned of the details of Operation Meteor, he became determined to destroy the Gundam. He was stopped in his attempts by Professor G, who refused to let him destroy such a "work of art." Instead, the Professor let him 'steal' the MS and leave for Earth. Duo will use the Deathscythe to only destroy OZ and United Earth Sphere Alliance facilities.

Shortly after the Gundam pilots returned to space, Duo and his

Deathscythe faced several OZ-12SMS Taurus Mobile Dolls. Due to the duo underestimating the combat capability of the Mobile Dolls, and the Deathscythe being unsuitable for space combat as it was designed for ground warfare, he and his Gundam were no match for the enemy forces and were both captured . OZ then used the damaged Deathscythe as a target in a training mission, where Trowa Barton (who disguised himself as MS OZ's pilot) destroyed the Gundam with very little hesitation using a beam cannon. The wrecked Deathscythe was later rebuilt and upgraded by the five Gundam scientists into XXXG-01D2 Gundam Deathscythe Hell.

Did you know?

  • The initial concept of the Deathscythe Gundam follows the "nationality" trend of Mobile Fighter G Gundam. The Deathscythe Gundam's design was "European", with a solid-bladed scythe bearing dragon-shaped decorations, and using a large shield that resembled a coffin.

  • Deathscythe means reaper in English, related to the great scythe and the initial concept of the Gundam.
  • The cannon used by the Deathscythe Gundam in Episode 11 is one of the Gundam's long-range weapons in the Mobile Suit Gundam Online Video Game. This weapon resembles the cannon used by the OZ-07MS Tragos.
