ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos

ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos

The ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos is the main Mobile Suit of the Mobile Series

Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS, it will undergo several modifications. Its pilot will be Mikazuki Augus.

Features

The Gundam Barbatos is one of 72 "Gundam" frames that were produced and used during the Calamity War approximately 300 years ago. After its recovery, Chryse Guard Security (CGS) used it as a power source through its Ahab Reactor. Aside from the fact that its Ahab reactors were still functional, this was decided primarily because Barbatos' cockpit was missing when found. A new cockpit similar to that used by the Mobile Worker was installed prior to its redeployment by 3rd Group. Lack of maintenance over the centuries since the Calamities War has degraded Barbatos' armor and combat potential. This is later rectified by Teiwaz technicians, who not only restored the Barbatos to its original appearance, but also restored it to a performance close to its original.

Gundam units like the Barbatos are able to achieve high energy efficiency because they have two Ahab reactors. However, as it is difficult to run them in parallel, only 72 Gundam frames were produced. The burden on the pilot is high due to high efficiency and maneuverability; however, it is mitigated by the implementation of inertial control and the use of Ahab particles generated from the reactor when a phase transition occurs inside its vacuum device. The cockpit structure is positioned in front of the reactor to take advantage of it. Among the same frame machines, the Barbatos has been adapted for great versatility, it has the potential to adapt to all circumstances by exchanging its equipment. He can also use the weapons and armor of defeated enemies to improve his combat abilities.

  • Alaya-Vijnana system

An organic device system, this old man-machine interface was developed during the Calamity War to maximize the machine's capabilities. Therefore, most Mobile Suits from that era, such as Gundams, are compatible with it. The system has two parts, one part is installed in the MS and the other part is implanted in the spine of the pilot. With this system, the driver can connect to the MS computer and process machine data directly. It also allows the pilot (even the uninstructed) to use an MS for combat without reading the instruction manual, and can make difficult weapons like the Barbatos' Longsword and Smoothbore Pistol much easier to use. The implant in the driver also improves spatial awareness. Declining technical capabilities after the Calamity War, coupled with the use of an incomplete version of the system in outer sphere areas (such as Mars and Jupiter), lead to implant surgery having a low success rate and not can only be performed at a young age, to let the implant fuse as the pilot grows. As the Barbatos' original cockpit was missing, it was fitted with a Mobile Worker's Alaya-Vijnana System interface to enable the system to function. Barbatos' Alaya-Vijnana System can transmit a higher amount of data to the pilot than usual because its limiter has been turned off for Mikazuki's use, so only he can pilot the Gundam without any problems.

  • Backpack Arms

There are two backpack arms on the Barbatos backpack, one on each side of the rear thruster. Backpack arms can mount weapons, and when their hidden hinged arms are deployed, certain weapons, such as the Smoothbore Pistol, can be used while still mounted.

  • JEE-M103 Kutan Type-III

Long-range transport/booster device used for transporting containers and Mobile Suit. He can travel at extremely high speeds and thus cover great distances in a short time. It was used by Mikazuki and Nadi to catch up with the Isaribi because they stayed on the Saisei to help overhaul the Barbatos.

  • Chest Reactive armor

Additional armor mounted on the chest, it is used by the Barbatos in its 5th form. The reactive chest armor was created by Tekkadan mechanic Nadi as a countermeasure against attacks from the Kimaris and his spear Gungnir. It can withstand a hit from the Gungnir and be purged immediately afterwards, repelling the attack. Barbatos can then use this opportunity to hold the spear and prevent further attacks.

Armaments

  • Mace: Maruba Arkay (CGS President) had considered using the Barbatos in battle and therefore saved some equipment for it. The Mace is one of them, it is a large physical weapon made from a rare high hardness alloy which is also used in the frames of Mobile Suits. As the MS use the nano-laminated armor for protection, these strike weapons are considered effective. The center of mass features a stake drive mechanism that fires a "needle" (a large spike) from the tip when activated, and this is often used to pierce enemy MS. The handle of the mass is telescopic and can be stored on the arm of the backpack when not in use. Used by the 1st Form through the 5th Form, it was lost during the atmospheric entry battle against the Gundam Kimaris and was left floating in earth's orbit.
  • Long Sword: A mobile katana-shaped sword, it was created in the factory at Teiwaz's base, the Saisei. Easy to handle due to its light weight, it shows its superiority in localized attacks. The hilt of the sword is later upgraded to better fit Barbatos' hands and to help minimize kinetic energy loss when wielding the weapon. Due to the high strength of the nano-laminated armor, the blades of the sword are ineffective, thus Mikazuki is forced to aim for the holes in the MS armor with the help of the Alaya-Vijnana system. The Longsword primarily functions as a backup melee weapon when the Mace or Special Large Mace is available, as Mikazuki finds it difficult to use. However, in the battle against the Graze Ein, Mikazuki has finally mastered the weapon and is shown to be able to slice through both the MS armor and the Frame in a single attack. The longsword can be stored on the arm of the backpack when not in use. It will be used by the Barbatos from the 4th form.
  • Gauntlet: Already equipped when the Barbatos was discovered on Mars. It is believed to be one of the original equipment of the Barbatos, but it is not a certainty. Used only by the 1st Form and 2nd Form, the Gauntlet was lost when it was ejected alongside the rest of the left forearm armor during the battle with Gjallarhorn's forces near Orbital Station Mars bass.
  • Smoothbore Gun: A 300mm caliber cannon produced for use primarily in a zero gravity and space environment, the emphasis was on power rather than accuracy. The high-speed maneuvering of enemy MSs in space made it more difficult for the gun to hit them with high accuracy, but this was overcome thanks to the Alaya-Vijnana system. The high-velocity bullet fired from the cannon sometimes stripped enemy MS armor pieces or even penetrated their nano-laminated armor. The weapon also has a 60mm machine gun on the back. It can be folded up and mounted on the arm of the MS backpack when not in use. The unfolded barrel can be used while still mounted thanks to the design of the arms of the backpack. Its magazine can contain 12 cartridges, it will be used from the 2nd to the 5th form.
  • GR-Es02 Wire Claw: Used only by the 3rd Form, it is a claw-type missile weapon mounted on the left forearm that is used to hold down enemy MS as well as latch onto enemy ships. It was taken from Gaelio's Schwalbe Graze and replaces the lost Gauntlet.
  • GR-H0 1.9m Battle Axe: A close combat weapon that will be used, temporarily, by the Barbatos during the battle in Mars Low Orbit, facing Gjallarhorn.
  • Long Range Rifle: A weapon borrowed from the Gundam Gusion Rebake. A modified long-range version of the Graze's 120mm rifle, it is created by Teiwaz engineers who are with the Turbines. Thanks to the longer barrel and the extra range, its long-range accuracy has been greatly improved.
  • Arm Mortar: Weapon originally designed for the Kutan Type-III, it can also be used by Mobile Suits. Two mortars can be stowed on each of the Barbatos' forearms. When in use, the mortar tilts forward for firing. Once the first mortar is launched, the second slides upwards. The mortar launcher then switches and the second mortar is loaded. Although only used by the 5th Form, Arm Mortars can also be used by the Ground Type 5th Form or the 6th Form.
  • 170mm Autocannon: Depending on the situation, the four-armed mortars can be replaced with a pair of autocannons that use coil magazines. Autocannon barrels expand when in use. Due to their limited ammunition, they are not suitable for long range shooting, but are very effective when used in close combat. Used by the 5th form Ground Type.
  • Large Special Mace: As a replacement for the original Mace after it was lost in the Atmospheric Entry Battle, it goes by the nickname 'Wrench Mace'. In addition to functioning as an excellent striking weapon, the front part of the mace can swing open and tightly clasp an enemy unit. A special chainsaw hidden in the bulbous front part of the mace can then slice through the enemy unit. Used by the 5th form Ground Type it can be stored on the backpack when not in use. Mace was destroyed in action by the Graze Ein during the Battle of Edmonton.

Shapes

1st form

Barbatos was in this form when Maruba Arkay (CGS President) discovered him in the Mars Desert 300 years after the Calamity War. Since its Ahab Reactors were still in working order, it was used as a power source for CGS HQ until Mikazuki embarked as a pilot. At the time, he had no shoulder armor.

2nd form

The CGS was later reformed into Tekkadan, and prior to Tekkadan's departure on

Land, Barbatos' 1st Form is equipped with the shoulder armor of a captured EB-06 Graze. These shoulder armors have the same white and blue color as the main body as they are painted with the same nano-laminated armor.

3rd form

After the battle against Gjallarhorn near the Low Orbital Station, the Barbatos 2nd Form is equipped with the Metal Clamp captured from Gaelio's Schwalbe Graze to repair damaged left forearm armor.

4th form

The original form of the Barbatos is reproduced by technicians at the base of

Teiwaz, the Saisei, from ancient materials from the time of the Calamity War that had been saved in their database. The balance of the machine is stabilized, and the efficiency and working rate of the two reactors are also improved after extensive maintenance and overhaul. Although the performance of the Barbatos is now closer to the original state, it is still not 100%.

5th form

A new form with waist enhancers, redesigned forearm armor with mortars, and chest-mounted reactive armor. Some of the new parts were supplied by the Montag Company. Waist boosters serve to increase the mobility of the Mobile Suit and were originally the hip mounted flight units of the Ein Schwalbe Graze, Tekkadan salvaged the parts when they were dislodged from the Schwalbe Graze in battle anterior. The reactive armor serves as a countermeasure against attacks from the Kimaris and his Gungnir spear.

5th Form Ground Type

A modified version of the 5th Form for ground combat, it was created with help from Eco Turbine and more used parts provided by the

Montag Company. The leg suspension was adjusted to accommodate earth gravity and new feet were used. As a result, the MS now has a higher center of gravity, leading to faster reaction and therefore better mobility under gravity. Added waist thrusters were removed as they were deemed unnecessary for ground combat, and forearm mortars can be swapped with autocannons.

6th form

A reinforced version of the Ground-Type 5th Forme for the final battle. Side skirt armor has been replaced with a pair of "Tail Boosters", shoulder armor has been replaced with that of an EB-06r Graze Ritter, and additional armor is added to the chest. Tail thrusters improve the ground mobility of the machine and reduce fuel consumption. The additional chest armor provides the cockpit with better protection against concentrated attacks and can withstand prolonged combat. Although the new armor reduces the mobility of the MS, it allows the Barbatos to fight for long periods of time without resupply. If needed, shoulder armor can be ejected and used as a decoy.

History

The Gundam Barbatos is the 8th of 72 Gundam Frames created by Gjallarhorn towards the end of the Calamity War to counter the threat of powerful Mobile Armor such as the Hashmal. It was later discovered by Maruba Arkay in the desert of Mars and was recovered to serve as a source

energy for the Chryse Guard Security base. The machine was taken out of the base by Mikazuki Augus during the assault on Gjallarhorn. The CGS, now Tekkadan, continued to upgrade the machine with parts and armor taken from the defeated MS Gjallarhorn. Teiwaz technicians then restored the Barbatos to its original appearance and made it closer to its original performance.

After the Brewers' defeat, spare parts from the Barbatos were used to transform the ASW-G-11 Gundam Gusion that Tekkadan had obtained from the space pirates into the ASW-G-11 Gundam Gusion Rebake. After the Montag Company offers their alliance to Tekkadan, the group gives them spare parts for the Gundam Barbatos as a gift. These parts were used in subsequent forms of the Barbatos, proving their usefulness during the Atmospheric Entry Battle and subsequent battles on Earth.

On Earth, the battle of Millennium Island with the forces of Carta Issue caused the Barbatos to lose his shoulder armor, which was replaced with that of an earlier defeated Graze Ritter. It has also been upgraded with new waist boosters. En route to Edmonton, Tekkadan again encountered Carta's forces, but they were quickly defeated by Barbatos. On the outskirts of Edmonton, the Barbatos and Tekkadan spent three days fighting with the forces of Corlis Stenja. The enemy was eventually reinforced by Gaelio Bauduin and his ASW-G-66 Gundam Kimaris Trooper and Ein Dalton in the EB-AX2 Graze Ein, the Barbatos then engaged in combat with the Kimaris. With the help of McGillis Fareed and his V08-1228 Grimgerde, Mikazuki and Barbatos escaped from the Kimaris Trooper and headed to the town where he stopped the Graze Ein from killing Kudelia Aina Bernstein. During the fight against the Graze Ein, Mikazuki was pushed to the limit, and to win he sought more power from the Barbatos through his Alaya Vijnana System. The system reacted and improved its reaction speed, which allowed the Barbatos to have better movements, smoother and faster. The Barbatos' armor and backpac were then ejected as decoys, and the MS managed to cut off the Graze Ein's forearms after Mikazuki had mastered the Long Sword - Barbatos' only hand weapon at the time. . The Barbatos then won the battle after breaching the Graze Ein's cockpit, killing Ein.

After the Battle of Edmonton, the Gundam Barbatos participated in many battles for Tekkadan. However, the accumulated damage soon proved too great for Tekkadan's mechanics to repair. Thus, it was sent alongside the Gundam Gusion Rebake to the Saisei's MS Workshop for overhaul, becoming the ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos Lupus.

  • Barbatos is the 8th demon of the Ars Goetia. He is Earl and Duke of Hell, leading thirty legions of demons and has four kings as companions to command his legions. He can talk to animals, predict the future, reconcile friends and rulers, and can lead men to hidden treasure by the enchantment of magicians.
  • Of all the Gundam frames shown in the anime, Barbatos is the only one with the traditional two vents.
  • Including other works in the Post Disaster timeline, only the Barbatos, Astaroth, and Marchosias possess the two-vented torso.
  • The Barbatos Master Grade has an original gimmick where parts of the mace head can be separated from the weapon and used as short swords.
  • On page 16 of the Mobile Suit Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans Mechanics & World 2 book, it was speculated that the Gundam Barbatos and the Gundam Flauros would have been on the same team during the Calamity War, as both machines have were discovered later on Mars.
